Good to Know Before You Go

Visa & Entry Process for French Citizens

1. Visa Requirement
All French passport holders must obtain a visa (ETA or e-Visa) before arriving in Sri Lanka or secure a visa on arrival, depending on current government policies.

2. How to Apply for an e-Visa (ETA)

  • The official way to apply is through the Sri Lankan government’s ETA/e-Visa portal. Ensure you use only the official site to avoid scams.srilankaembassy.fr

  • You’ll need your passport (valid for at least 6 months), travel dates, accommodation details, and a return ticket or onward travel assurance.

  • After submission and payment, the ETA is typically sent by email within 24 hours.

  • Print or save a digital copy—you may be asked to show it upon arrival.

3. Visa on Arrival

  • The ETA system experienced interruptions in mid-2024, leading to changes in visa-on-arrival availability.

  • French citizens are included among nationalities eligible for visa-on-arrival in some periods.

  • Entry is typically straightforward—immigration officers will check your passport and visa status before stamping your passport.

4. Free Visa Program (Pilot Initiative)

  • A pilot program was approved in 2024 that allowed travelers from 35 countries—including France—to receive free 30-day tourist visas.

  • However, implementation was delayed and required further parliamentary approval.

  • As of mid-2025, the program is now moving forward—but always confirm on official platforms closer to your trip.

5. Extensions

  • Tourist visas (ETA) can be extended—typically up to 180 days total—by applying in person at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo.

6. Entry & Exit Stamps

  • Visas are not issued as stickers—instead, immigration authorities stamp your passport upon entry and exit. Make sure there’s enough blank space—usually about one-third of a page is sufficient
